Drawings of naked / semi-naked people

December 31, 2007 on 8:30 pm | In Illustration | 1 Comment

So I teach figure drawing a couple hours a week. It’s definitely been a blessing in disguise. I’ve been approached to teach before but I’ve always held off. Now that I’m doing it, I’m finding that working with kids is rewarding, but it also helps my drawings a lot. Once you gotta teach somebody how to do it, you start to analyze it yourself, and in the end, you’re able to break things down better.

Holed Up

Hello world,

I’ve locked myself up at my parent’s house so I can work like a madman without any distractions. I was supposed to put EVERYTHING on hold this month so I could bust out as many FR*A clothing designs as possible… unfortunately life was getting in the way.

It’s nice to settle in with just my mac, some pencils and paper, and get absorbed into design. I’ve also taken this opportunity to brush up on some drawings / paintings and studied some After Effects tutorials online.

The year’s just about over and looking back, I gotta say it’s been about 5x’s harder than any year I’ve had so far. Quitting my job, only to join a startup with no paycheck in sight - it’s quite overwhelming. Never in my life did I anticipate depending on freelance to pay the bills, and yet somehow I find myself in that situation.

Anyways, I’ll write a proper rant blog in the future but it’s back to work for me!

BTW, do you know Gez Fry? Really good work. I was looking to do some practice painting and found this drawing of Gez Fry’s:

Here is my painting based off of Gez Fry’s drawing:

Happy holidays.

FM

Howdy y’all.

Working on lots of cool things (I’m happy to say). One of the cool things is that I’m just about wrapping up FM’s new website. I’m passionate about their music and had a blast putting together all the visuals. Hopefully it’ll be up by next week. For now here’s a screen shot of what I got going (layout wise).

Big Phony Ill

This week’s FR*A article is on Big Phony. I love him as a person, and as an artist. I’m also a huge fun of his brand’s artistic direction (thanks to National Television).

So I was lucky enough to get him to wear a paper bag over his head - I loved the image from his “Smoking Kills” EP and wanted to do a real live version of the illustration.

Here’s the photo:

From that point I added some text and a bit of playful drawing:

And finally some texture to give it that final touch:

I had to crop the image to fit the dimensions of the page. You can view the full interview here

Ben Jelen Illustration

This week’s FR*A article is on Ben Jelen. I didn’t want to use the same promo pics for the article cover so I decided to put together an illustration. Ben Jelen’s new album “Ex-Sensitive” is about the planet Earth and the problems we face on a global scale. Taking this knowledge I wanted to portray Ben playing a piano made up of trees… I didn’t want it to be too literal so I went for a subtle hint by overlapping images.

Steps 1 - 4…

The final image actually made the article cover, but the below is the billboard image on the site:
