I Feel Good
April 29, 2008 on 1:00 am | In Illustration, Design, Misc | No CommentsHad a nice night at Feel Good Fusion the other Friday. Gotta say it wasn’t as packed as the last two, but i thought it had just the right amount of people (that means I didn’t have to wait an hour to get a drink). This time around I decided to step up the “interactive” level of the performance and actually draw as many heads at the event as possible. So I spent several minutes getting to know some of the attendees and taking their head shots. Then it was back to my station where I would do the drawings of the actual people attending.

1. That’s right son, people are actually taking pictures of my work. 2. You know you made it when people are forging your artwork.

1. Dj Revolution doing his thing. 2. This is where I last left off…
Unfortunately I arrived at the event late (sorry Denkym!) so I didn’t come close to finishing the piece. If you want to see the finished piece as well as the finished Feb. piece, come to the next one! Really though, come on out. I gotta say, Feel Good Fusion is always a good time. The vibe is amazing, I can’t think of another event where so many different types of people gather to truly enjoy the arts and get down.
Till next time BITCHES!!!
So You Need a Logo…
March 20, 2008 on 11:24 am | In Design | 1 CommentA client wanted to get a logo done for a new college - American College of Art & Design, or ACA for short. Somehow knowing that it was for an “Art & Design” college put the pressure on.
So as usual, I started out with some comps (click the thumb for a bigger view):

The client liked a couple of the comps and was interested in combining some of them, in particular numbers 3 & 13. Both featured a font type with an abstract shape, however while #3 seemed to imply passion, #13 seemed to imply construction. I realized that by combining similar implied shapes, I would essential have an abstract image to represent “Art & Design”.
I grabbed a pen and sketched out some ideas:

The sketches lead to a vectorized version and with a tweak here and there, I came up with a final logo which was eventually approved by the client.

The Love Movement
March 11, 2008 on 12:21 am | In Illustration, Design | No CommentsTatum Jones asked me to design their new EP album work. I couldn’t figure out what direction to approach this until they finalized on the album name, “The Love Movement”. This instantly brought a somewhat abstract piece to mind, focusing on colors. I wanted to create a gradient going from cold to warm colors to subtly convey a “love movement”. When I got down to sketching it, I realized it would have to be more literal for audiences, Tatum Jones also requested that their logo be the center of attention (they didn’t want any photographs).
So here were the first initial sketches I sent to the fellas:

We went back and forth for a bit (no pun intended) and decisions were made… I also added a drawing of a piano hammer to connect “The Love Movement” to a musical context.
Here’s one version of the cover:

Along with the disc:

In the end the fellas decided to keep the focus on a 3 dimensional version of their logo:

It was great working with the guys of Tatum Jones, and yes, the music is good - check it out when you can by clicking on the link I have at the beginning of this post.
FMonyourdial.com
January 16, 2008 on 12:29 pm | In Design | 2 CommentsHello internet,
I just finished up the new FM site - fmonyourdial.com with the help of Daniel Park (PM). I’ve been a fan of the group for some time now and had a real specific image in mind for them when they approached me about the site. I’ve been listening to their unreleased new stuff, and noticed that they had a lot of electro sounding beats to them. The word “Electro-Hop” comes to mind, and with that I ran with the visuals.
The site was a great learning experience because we had to create an in-depth admin user interface… so although I’m happy with the visual layout and illustrations for the site, I’m really proud of the way the site functions overall.
As for the layout it all begins with some sketching:

Then some photoshop mock-ups, FM explained to me that they wanted something very “LA”.

But that wasn’t it.
So I went the other route - Electro…

But that was probably overkill.
Finally I found a look that was right between the two:

And now you can view the finished site here: fmonyourdial.com
Esley…
April 20, 2007 on 2:04 am | In Design, Apparel | 3 CommentsA couple of weeks ago I got contacted to create an identity for an upcoming female line. The owner described it as a cross between A&F and Bebe. He discussed possibly having imagery with an identifiable animal or some kind of flourish. Based upon what my client had said, I started sketching appropriate ideas.
In the end I provided a logotype as well as some vectorized imagery which he can use for different things - The first order of business being a florescent shop sign and a main label for jackets and hoodies.
